This is the reason why he suggests that meat and seafood be a major part of the diet. In addition, it is recommended that the intake of milk and dairy products must be extremely low, since regular consumption of dairy products by O positive individuals may lead to cardiac problems.

Controversies

All the claims made by Dr. D'Adamo are based on results and observations of other research groups. No clinical trials have been carried out to prove his theory of food tolerance based on blood groups.

Although he claims that lectins in foods interact with the antigens present on RBCs and cause health problems, research done by independent biochemists show no such lectin-incompatibility.

In one of his books on the same subject, Dr. D'Adamo claims that the Blood Type Diet has been beneficial for individuals with rheumatoid arthritis. However, there is no scientific evidence for the same.

Although it is true that blood type O is very common, there is no evidence that it represents an ancestral gene.

Diet drinks raise heart concern in postmenopausal women

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Diet drinks may increase the risk of heart attacks, stroke and other heart problems in postmenopausal women, according to an informal study that could take some fizz out of enjoyment of the popular beverages.

Compared to women who never or seldom consume diet drinks, those who drank two or more a day were 30 percent more likely to suffer a cardiovascular event and 50 percent more likely to die from related disease, researchers found.

The findings were gleaned from an analysis of diet drink intake and consequences among almost 60,000 participants in the Women's Health Initiative, a long-running U.S. observational study of cardiovascular health trends among postmenopausal women.

"Our findings are in line with and extend data from previous studies showing an association between diet drinks and metabolic syndrome," said Dr. Ankur Vyas of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, lead investigator of the study. The syndrome is associated with a cluster of risk factors for heart disease, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and weight gain.

Results of the study were presented at the annual scientific sessions of the American College of Cardiology, in Washington.

The average age of women in the diet drink study was 62.8, and they had to have had no history of cardiovascular disease to be included in the analysis.

Through a questionnaire, the women were asked to report their diet drink consumption over the previous three months. A drink was defined as a 12-ounce beverage and included both diet sodas and diet fruit drinks.

After an average followup of 8.7 years, a combination of negative outcomes including coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, heart attack, ischemic stroke, peripheral arterial disease and cardiovascular death were seen in some 8.5 percent of women who consumed two or more diet drinks a day.

That compared with 6.9 percent of women who had five to seven drinks per week, 6.8 percent having one to four drinks per week, and 7.2 percent in those having zero to three diet drinks per month.

"We only found an association, so we can't say that diet drinks cause these problems," Vyas said, adding that other factors may explain the apparent connection between diet drink consumption and risk of heart attack and stroke.

For instance, he noted that women who consumed two or more diet drinks per day were younger, more prone to be smokers, and had a higher prevalence of diabetes, high blood pressure and of being overweight.

Vyas said more studies are needed to more closely assess the risk of diet sodas and cardiovascular risks, if such a connection actually exists.

Previous studies have suggested a connection between artificially sweetened drinks and weight gain in adults and teens, and a likely increase in metabolic syndrome.

How Did I Do It?

I recently encountered the $39 dollar experiment which was conducted by Tom Locke. In this experiment, he wrote to 100 companies asking them for free products. It appears that you can be sent free products from a company by saying how much you enjoy using their products and you would like to express how much of a fan you are of their amazing creations. He received many items and products from a variety of companies, I was impressed. I wanted to try this out for myself.

So, I tried it out with a few companies, I wrote them a letter, I'll explain how exactly below and waited. One day, a huge package arrived in the post and I received so many products from one company. Some companies never wrote back to me or sent anything, I expected that. But, I realized that it isn't all that difficult to get some free products.

I will now explain how you can do it too.

1. Make A List Of Companies

The very first thing you have to do is to make a list of the companies you want to write to, you can write to one or two or you can write to four or five, the choice is yours. Look at items in your cupboard, bathroom and office, get the names of these companies. Here are a selection of companies that you can write to, but remember, these companies are not guaranteed to send you samples, you will have to see for yourself. If I have written to a company and received free products, I'll let you know.

Make Up, Perfume - Are you interested in makeup or perfume? Try writing to makeup companies for some samples such as: Clinique, Rimmel, Carma Labs (others have received products from Carma Labs, I don't live in America so I couldn't contact them), Chap Stick, Burts Bees, Lush etc.

Diet may influence ovarian cancer survival




Women with healthier diets before an ovarian cancer diagnosis are less likely to die in the years following the cancer than women with poorer diets, according to a new study.



The exceptions were women with diabetes or a high waist circumference, which is often linked to diabetes.

A healthy diet before diagnosis may indicate a stronger immune system and, indirectly, the capacity to respond favorably to cancer therapy, said lead author Cynthia A. Thomson of Health Promotion Sciences at the Canyon Ranch Center for Prevention and Health Promotion at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

"It also may reflect our capacity to sustain healthy eating after diagnosis, which in turn could support better health in a broader sense," Thomson told Reuters Health by email.

Researchers looked back at 636 cases of ovarian cancer occurring between 1993 and 1998, 90 percent of which were invasive cancers.

The women had filled out dietary and physical activity questionnaires at least one year before their cancer diagnoses as part of the larger Women's Health Initiative study. Researchers measured their heights, weights and waist circumferences.

The healthy eating index in this study measured 10 dietary components, scoring diets with a higher amount of vegetables and fruit, more variety in vegetables and fruit, more whole grains, lower amounts of fat and alcohol and more fiber as healthier than other diets.

On average, the women were diagnosed with ovarian cancer around age 63.

As of September 17, 2012, 354 of the women had died, and 305 of those died specifically from ovarian cancer.

When the researchers divided the women into three groups based on their diet quality, those in the healthiest-eating group were 27 percent less likely to die of any cause after ovarian cancer diagnosis than those in the poorest diet group, according to the results published in JNCI, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

There was a similar but slightly weaker association between pre-diagnosis diet and death due specifically to ovarian cancer.

"The index gives more points for eating good foods, such as vegetables and whole grains, and fewer points for eating not-recommended foods, such as added sugars, fatty foods and refined grains," said Dr. Elisa V. Bandera, associate professor of Epidemiology at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey in New Brunswick.

"Interestingly, they found that it was not amazonaws the individual components that affected mortality, but an overall healthy diet," said Bandera, who was not part of the new study.

A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains may lower inflammation, which has been linked to ovarian cancer mortality, she told Reuters Heath by email.

"Such a diet has also been linked to reduced risk of other chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease which may complicate ovarian cancer treatment and increase mortality," she said.

High scores on the Healthy Eating Index are very similar to guidelines and recommendations for cancer survivors provided by the American Institute for Cancer Research and the American Cancer Society, Dr. Anne McTiernan of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle told Reuters Health by email.

"However, the data on diet and lifestyle associations with ovarian cancer survival are all observational," said McTiernan, who was not involved in the new study. "Clear recommendations would require a randomized controlled clinical trial - the gold standard of medical evidence - before women with ovarian cancer could be advised to change their lifestyles in order to improve their prognosis."

Women with a history of diabetes and those with a waist circumference greater than 34 inches did not seem to get the same survival benefit from a healthy diet as other women. In their report, the study authors note that past research has already linked diabetes with higher-than-average mortality in ovarian cancer.

The amount of regular exercise women got before diagnosis did not seem to affect the link between diet quality and survival.

Although the researchers accounted for exercise and total calorie intake, they did not account for ovarian cancer treatment. Women who had healthier diets may also have had access to better treatment, Bandera noted.

In any case, Thomson said, healthy diets do seem to be important to reduce cancer risk and to improve survival after cancer. "One in two U.S. adults will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their lifetime and eating healthy is important in regards to how we come through this experience."

Healthy behaviors may also delay the onset of cancer, for example from age 55 to 65, but that is difficult to demonstrate, she said.

Sainah Theodore, serving in the Army Reserves and with dreams of being an officer, says she turned to an herbal diet supplement that she had used before with success to help her lose weight and be fit for a combat job.

As a result, she says she went into a psychological rage that cost her not only her career aspirations but tens of thousands of dollars of property damage and lost wages.

"Aside from paranoid, aggressive, nasty text messages she sent to her mother all day, she was picking fights with strangers in a movie theater," said her lawyer, Brian C. Pascale. "She said she heard voices and ... was driving aggressively and reacting erratically."

After a week of rage-driven episodes that came to a head on Dec. 19 with the physical destruction of her home, Theodore was committed involuntarily to a hospital mental ward for five days, according to a lawsuit filed in the state Supreme Court of Kings County on Jan. 6.

Theodore, 26, is suing the Natural Health Food Center in Brooklyn and its owner, Adalgsa Garcia. Theodore's lawyers say they are trying to find the manufacturers of Natural Lipo-X to hold them accountable.

The product is no longer available on the store's website, but it is described elsewhere online as a "a lipotropic formula designed to amplify your fat burning efforts by increasing fat metabolism and helping to control hunger."

The lawsuit alleges Garcia, who uses the title "Dr." before her name, is not a medical doctor.

"She passes herself off as a doctor, which makes people trust her," said Marc. S. Ullman, a lawyer who specializes in food and drug litigation and is helping with Theodore's case.

Garcia's website states she is a "certified natural health professional" with a doctoral degree in neuropathy. It also says she obtained a degree in "general medicine and family medicine" at Nordestana University in the Dominican Republic.

But, said Pascale, "I found no doctors registered under her name with the New York State Department of Health."

Theodore's lawyers said they tested Theodore's remaining diet pills, and a lab report from Oregon's Flora Research Laboratories dated April 4, 2013, obtained by ABCNews.com shows they contained two chemical additives that are not approved by the FDA for over-the-counter dietary supplements and are not listed in the bottle's label of ingredients: sibutramine and phenolphthalein.

The FDA has issued numerous recalls when products are found to contain sibutramine and phenolphthalein. Its web page, "Questions and Answers about FDA's Initiative Against Contaminated Weight Loss Products" lists 72 tainted dietary supplement products that contain undeclared active ingredients, including eight that contain both sibutramine and phenolphthalein.
